The Union No.4 is a clean, medium-bodied filter blend with a gentle sweetness and a flavour profile that moves from blackcurrant and orange through to a soft cocoa finish. Built around washed Ugandan coffee from the slopes of Mount Elgon and developed specifically for slower brew methods, it's the kind of cup that rewards a little patience and asks very little in return.
Bright, blackcurrant-sweet filter with clarity
The Union No.4 is Coaltown's first blend built specifically for filter brewing - developed over many months of cupping and fine-tuning at their Ammanford roastery, and given the No.4 designation with some pride. It's a clean, medium-bodied cup with a gentle sweetness that runs through it without ever pushing too hard, and the flavour profile reflects that same sense of quiet confidence: blackcurrant and orange provide a bright, fruit-led lift, while cocoa rounds things out and keeps it grounded.
The coffee comes from the slopes of Mount Elgon in Uganda, where the altitude - running from 1,700 to 2,200 metres - and the fertile, well-watered hillsides create conditions well suited to producing clean, expressive specialty coffee. The washed process keeps everything precise and transparent, which is exactly what you want when you're brewing filter: nothing muddied, nothing hidden. If your mornings tend towards a pour-over, Chemex or cafetiere, and you'd like a cup that's easy to drink but has something interesting going on, this is a reliable and considered choice.
About the Roaster
Scott James set up Coaltown in Ammanford, a South Wales town that ran on anthracite coal for generations, with a straightforward idea: that great coffee could give a post-industrial community something to rally around again. The team roasts daily in small batches, working a range that moves from easy-drinking espresso blends through to more expressive single origins.
