Ammanford, Carmarthenshire
Coaltown Coffee

A specialist roaster serving a new black gold shaped by the area’s coal mining heritage

The Coaltown Roastery is our HQ and the heart of what we do. All of our coffee is roasted onsite and coaltown's retail, wholesale and training operations are located within the roastery. The site is just down from the old Ammanford mines and the old coal train use to pass us twice daily, so the location could not be more fitting!

Their Coffee Range

Coffee is shaped by environment, process and craft at every stage. From remote growing regions through harvesting, drying, transport, roasting and brewing, Coaltown approaches each step with a focus on quality, accountability and long-term sustainability. The aim is to build direct trade relationships with producers, creating a supply chain that is transparent and mutually beneficial.

Roasting is where those characteristics are refined. It is a controlled process, balancing time, temperature and sensory change to bring out the best in each coffee. Larger batches are roasted on a restored 75kg machine for core blends, while smaller single origins are developed on a 12kg roaster, allowing for consistency across blends and precision across more delicate profiles.

The range reflects this balance between consistency and variety. House coffees offer reliable, well-developed profiles for everyday drinking, while single origins highlight distinct regional characteristics.

Black Gold No.3 is a balanced, approachable house blend from Brazil and Honduras, with nutty notes of milk chocolate and biscuit. Candle Light No.1 is a Brazil-led coffee with a deeper profile, carrying notes of dark chocolate and cinder toffee. Anthracite No.2 is a more expressive single origin from Uganda, with brighter fruit notes of strawberry, peach and dried fruit.

More About Coaltown Coffee

Coaltown Coffee is rooted in the town of Ammanford, known in Welsh as Rhydaman, a place shaped by industry, change and community.

Coaltown’s approach extends beyond the product. The business is part of the B Corp community, a global group of companies using business to address social and environmental challenges. Coaltown began this process in 2019 and became the first speciality coffee roaster in the UK to achieve certification.

Today, the roastery remains at the centre of the operation, combining production with a public-facing espresso bar and retail space. It reflects the same principle the business was founded on: creating long-term value in the place it comes from, while producing coffee that meets a clear standard for sourcing, quality and impact.

Coaltown has always been focused on accountability and transparency throughout our supply chains. Its Specialty Coffee meets the highest standards of environmental and social practices, and is committed to upholding and furthering these. From becoming a Living Wage Foundation employer to constantly evaluating our habits in regards to waste and emissions, Coaltown is reflective of the hard work the team puts in to making the planet a better place for everyone on it.
